My name is Shelly Saywell, I'm a documentary filmmaker.
I think everything I care about in the world and have always cared about ever since I was
a child has found a voice in documentary filmmaking. All of these films, all of these stories,
encompass our humanity and who we are and what we care about.
I loved U of T. I decided - I had been at another university and I came to U of T a
couple years in. I picked up the U of T catalogue the year that I started U of T and I just
went through and checked courses about things that fascinated me. And I took things like
Sanskrit studies and Islamic history, and it was just fantastic.
I just remember it in a very romantic way, I mean I remember having my journal and sitting
in cafés or cafeterias and writing and thinking. At the university age, if you're going in
at 17 or 18, you're in a hurry to get somewhere and I understand that, of course. But looking
back, just dig it, just enjoy it, love it, and appreciate it.
