Sungmi: Welcome to Idiot Box. I'm Sungmi Choi.
Kyle: I'm Kyle McNally.
Kyle: We're discussing, uh, the two new network shows that involve fairy tales. Um, one of
which is Grimm, it's on NBC. It features, you know, a police detective who sort of encounteres
a magical world in Portland, Oregon, and the other is Once Upon a Time on ABC. It follows
Snow White being brought to the real world and having no recollection of her fairy tale
life.
Sungmi: Which is your pick?
Kyle: No, which is your pick? I wanna hear from you first.
Sungmi: Okay, well my pick, you're gonna know which it is - it's Once Upon a Time, the soap-ier,
obviously. I just think it's more interesting right now. Grimm just hasn't caught me yet,
whereas Once Upon a Time has already got me sucked in.
Kyle: But you admit to watching both.
Sungmi: I admit to watching both, I mean, let's be honest, both are not perfect shows.
Kyle: Right, I agree. completely agree. I think Once Upon a Time lacks, sort of, a drive.
I don't... I feel like I already know what's going to happen, like, they're not going to
have amnesia anymore, and then the show's over for me. I mean, and, the fact that they're
sort of tying the show so closely to the source material means that they really are like locking
themselves into the story plot...
Sungmi: I don't know, I still feel like anything could happen, I still feel like something
else could happen. I feel like there's room for that...
Kyle: No, but you can't. I mean, Snow White can't end up with anyone but Prince Charming,
like you know...
Sungmi: It's a reinvention...
Kyle: The queen is going to die in some horrific way probably...
Sungmi: The thing is I feel like it's gotten me invested in the relationships and the characters,
where as Grimm right now, I just can't care about anybody.
Kyle: Yeah, but Grimm has the room to grow. It really has... it started, I would say,
maybe not as strong as it needed to...
Sungmi: Is the lead gonna get smarter? Is the sidekick gonna get funnier?
Kyle: Well hopefully!
Sungmi: That's where I want the growth to happen.
Kyle: Well, I mean, and those things can happen. I would say that the show has the potential
to really grow an audience and sort of a following because it's not locked into fairy tales.
It's basically...
Sungmi: I see what you're saying, I just don't care about this guy yet...
Kyle: it's basically inspired by fairy tales instead of being beholden to them.
Sungmi: I just feel like the main character, he just doesn't seem like bright enough. He
has this entire trailer of stuff and he's like...
Kyle: I know but like, he's.. it's genetic, it's genetic. He's a Grimm by genes, so like,
the smartest people can't always be, like, the heroes. He screws up a little.
Sungmi: He is, he is real handsome. He's real handsome. I give you that.
Kyle: Right, so maybe there's...
Sungmi: He is nice to look at.
Kyle: Maybe the Grimms didn't go off, you know, wits. You know...
Sungmi: Maybe that's why they have those...
Kyle: Survival of the fittest? No, survival of the prettiest. But, I mean, I still that
he that he really has, sort of like, a strong... I don't know, there's something about him
and his journey with the audience...
Sungmi: I think what you like about it is the long shots of him looking thoughtful.
That's what you like about him...
Kyle: Oh yeah? Oh yeah, we're going to go back to this now?
Sungmi: I think that's what you like. And that's fine, that's fair. I like those shots
too.
Kyle: I mean, I can say the same thing for Once Upon a Time. You just wanna see Prince
Charming in a coma.
Sungmi: He's out of the coma now, for the record.
Kyle: Yeah, like stumbling around. Um, I mean, I think I just find that Grimm has a potential
to grow in a way that Once Upon a Time is locked in.
Sungmi: You know, I hope it lives up to this potential, but for now I'm just not seeing
it. Um, let us know which you're tuning into. We're curious because obviously, I'm right
and Kyle's wrong as always! But let us know in the comments below and on Facebook and
catch up on SideReel!
