Yo, this is RAHZEL - The Godfather of Noise
You are watching BeatBoxBattle.TV
Beatboxing is...
is a personal thing for me
It helped mold the direction of my life
Beatboxing was an outlet
Where I didn´t have to turn to
to the negative element
where other people
that I grew up with
had to turn to that element
because they had no outlet
the first record that I ever beatboxed
was Chic "Good Times"
and my friends...they loved it!
Wow, you sound like the record
do it again.
that progressed me
doing other records
those genres at that time
the Rock ´n Roll records,
Black Sabath
All these records at that time
I was beatboxing these records
as time went on
it became my fascination
and that´s when I discovered
The Disco Three
Which eventionaly went on to The Fatboys
That was the birth of...
... the Name "Beatbox" itself
Doug e Fresh coined the Phrase
"the Human Beatbox"
Fatboys became popular
so now everone knows about
The human Beatbox
I started to MC first
MCing was a more prominent thing
because it was more popular
but in the back of my mind...
I had no DJ equipment
I wanted to be like Flash
so what I used to do
I used to take a Taperecorder
and borrow another one from a friend
made the beat
then I started to multi-layer
So i would do a beat
record it to another beat
than record it back
doing another beat on top of that
adding more sounds
and I kept doing this back- and forward.
So by time I was done
there was a entire song
and I used to rhyme over it
All my friends
where like:
"who´s doing the beat?"
and I: "I´m doing the beat
and I´m rhymin´at the same time!"
everybody went crazy
this is before technologie
this is before the looping,
the MPC.
the only invention at that time
was the Gemini Beatbox
everybody knows this record
"Flash is on the beatbox"
So, what you do now?
You had the Beatboxbattles
that was all I did
I went from borrow to borrow
from town to town
to battle the best Beatboxers.
that was the only way
for you to get recognized
You know, there was no MTV.
there were no camera crews
absolutely no technologie
it was very limited
so your only way,
you had to sneak on the train
you hear about a party across town
hopefully you know somebody
"could I get on, just for 5 minutes?"
If you´re good, 5 turn to 20 minutes...
30 minutes... then you rock the party.
and so your name get out
people go: "The guy on the Beatbox
what´s your name?"
"Rahzel dude!"
You start making friends
with the popular DJs.
And if you see each other
in a club or on a park-event, they are:
"Ohhh Yo!"
You are known!
every party you rock
is like a knough
and then a bigger knough
you takin´the crown from someone
that is popular in that neighbourhood
so that was my challenge
along the way
you make friends
like me and Kenny Muhammad
we´ve been friends
since we were little kids,
little teenagers
for a long time!
even a guy that I battled
that taught him
I battled the guy
that taught Kenny Muhammad!
In those days it was fun,
you had your little crew.
Fun, but a little dangerous
because you knew
now you´re going into
another teritory
another neighbourhood
the people don´t know you
if you beat that guy there,
sometimes you might not leave...
to happy, you know!
this happend a couple of times to me.
But my name
slowly started to get around
I lived in Queens,
then I started going to the Bronx!
then started going to Long Island!
I started going to Statten Island!
I started going to Manhatten!
My mainly difference
I didn´t do beats
that were popular.
I did beats that were my own beats
that´s how I won most of my battles
most of the Beatboxers
did beats that were allready popular.
It´s difficult to explain to people
´cause at that time
it was popular underground.
So it wasn´t that many
Hip-Hop records for you to do.
So you had to be
way more creative!
You had to pull your own elements.
One of my first sound effects was like...
This is invented in ´84 !
then I started to entertain the thought
of making records
that´s when I made
a record with Mike D.
Is a guy who was real popular
used to be in the same group
with LL Cool J.
his name was Mike D. and the LL posse
he was the front man of
Main Source After Large Professor
So, I made a record with him.
then I formed a group with
at that time named DJ Earth
But the world know him now under
Earth Gody
I was in a group with him.
It was the first group signed to
Jam Master Jay´s record label!
A big influence into the development
of the art of Beatbox was Paul C.
He was responsible for
Super Lover C.,
Organized Confussion, Rakim,
Steez O,
Ultra Magnetic!
He actionly itroduced me to Ultra Magnetic.
Ultra Mag used to battle different groups
Kid and Play
at the Latin quarters
and i was their secret weapon.
I was a part of "Critical Beatdown"
which is the Most Classic Rap Album ever...!
"Critical Beatdown" - Ultra Magnetic
The places that I´ve been,
The eras that I´ve been in...
Everything I´ve been a part of
has been MONUMENTAL !
This is my life !
This is how much it means to me
my life !
Something to save me
from the spare.
This saved me from the spare !
This Beatboxin´ saved my life !
It didn´t matter if the people loved it,
or people hated it,
or they didn´t want to listen to it anymore,
or they decided to make some new music
and they want to get into Gangster Music
that was more popular.
I didn´t matter to me. I kept goin´ !
I kept goin´ !
I´m basicly here
to inspire people.
If someone is inspired by what I do
then that´s a beautiful thing.
I want all the young people
that are coming up
and learning how to beatbox
and want it to be great
It comes from in here...
not here !
you want to create something where
you have me going "Ohhh !
I got to go home and do that
what he just did! "
Just like when people hear
of Kenny Muhammad, or Scratch,
or they hear "If your mother only knew".
they want to go home and practice it.
that´s what I want.
I want to see a joung Beatboxer,
where I´m going home
and I say "Damn !
I want to practise what that kid just did !"
If you´re particular happen to be
a very, very good Beatboxer
and you find a way out
how to be succesfull at it. Then Yeah !
All these rewards will come to you !
But, the heart comes first !
The reward doesn´t come first !
The heart comes first !
As long as you have heart,
there will allways be reward,
there will allways be satisfaction,
there will allways be happienes !
It was worth the sacrifice,
it was worth the humiliation,
it was worth the nay-sayers.
it was worth it !
Because at the end of the day,
the many seeds that
have been planted
and look what it come from it.
It comes from it a joung person
as such as yourself.
You want to be a Beatboxer
and you´re going to be the best !
