Hi there, Fasih Qureshi from shortenthelearningcurve.com. If you've just recently bought a lighting
kit or softbox, you may have realised that it's not the easiest thing to put together.
In this video I'll show you step by step instructions and show you how you go from
this, to this. Before assembling your softbox, ensure you
have the following components. You'll require a lightholder, lightbulbs, both inner and
outer protectors, 4 rods and of course the softbox. In this video, the softbox I'm
assembling is a 50 x 70cm rectangular softbox, which when assembled, is screwed onto a light
stand. Step 2: Covering light holder with the softbox
Place the light holder through the softbox opening. With a fivehead lightholder, the
position of the lightholder should create a plus sign with the corners at 45 degree
angles.
Step 3: Inserting the rods You'll notice that the softbox has two corners
with pockets and two corners with Velcro straps. Starting with one of the corners with the
Velcro straps, thread the rod through the velro opening and insert the rod into the
hole in the side of the lightholder. You'll need to stretch the softbox material to ensure
that you're able to fasten the Velcro securely to keep the rod in place.
Now repeat this process with the Velcro strap on the other side.
Once both rods are in place, you may need to adjust the softbox fabric to allow you
to insert the third rod. Start by placing the rod into the light holder first and make
sure it's fixed in tightly. Now carefully bend the rod so that you're able to insert
the rod into the pocket. This may require a little bit of a struggle so don't be afraid
to gently pull or stretch the softbox as required. Finally repeat the process with the last corner.
When securely in place, the rods should naturally take the shape of the softbox and bend inward
into the light holder. Step 4: Screw on the light bulbs
Whilst holding onto the base of the light bulb and not the bulb itself, gently screw
in the bulbs. Once done and before applying the protectors, it's a good idea to check
that all light heads are working. Step 5: Attach the protectors
Each softbox should come with an inner protector and an outer protector. Simply Velcro the
inner protector by matching the Velcro with the sewn in Velcro of the soft box. Then apply
the outside protector with the matching external Velcro on the softbox.
Step 6: Attaching softbox to light stand. Finally, screw on the light holder into place
on the light stand and you're done! I hope this helped shorten your learning curve
and I'd love to hear if you've got tips of your own when assembling a softbox. If
