MARTY ZERK: Hi, I'm Marty. I'm a fourth year mechanical engineering student at the Queensland University of Technology.
One of the major benefits of the Dean's Scholars Program is that you are aware of who the other
academically-minded, dedicated students and staff and industry professionals are so you
quickly build a network of the people who are looking to excel in their various fields.
Well there were a number of networking events in the first couple of years.
So the first two years I was at QUT and this last year, so my third year, I spent abroad
as another opportunity as part of the Dean's Scholars Program where I spent two semesters
on exchange at the technical uni in Munich and I also undertook an internship there which
was organised through QUT and through BMW, so I guess that was the most significant opportunity
that the Dean's Scholars Program provided.
They run a number of networking events that I've attended.
There were a few in first year that I also attended as part of the Dean's Scholars Program
specifically for the Dean's Scholars: networking events with professionals from a whole range
of different industries.
BEEDS is an alumni group run by the Dean's Scholars for past Dean's Scholars and their
related industry professionals.
They organise a whole bunch of events which are also, primarily, I guess, they're fun
events but they invite a whole lot of the alumni back so you get to see where other
people from the program have ended up, in what fields they're doing, and what they're
up to and you also get to create some bonds there and some friendships.
I know they do a great debate which is always fun and other events like this so it's a bit
of fun mixed with networking, I guess.
Well, I would advise new Dean's Scholars entering the program to really make the most of it
and don't be afraid to get out of their comfort zone and approach a whole bunch of people
that aren't necessarily in their year group. Just try and broaden your, I don't know, involvement
in the program.
