How to Stop a Box Spring from Squeaking. If a squeaky box spring is keeping you or your
significant other up all night, this guide will get everyone back to counting sheep in
no time. You will need Screwdrivers Hex wrenches Small board Hardcover book Spray lubricant
and construction stapler. Step 1. Check the bed frame and tighten all the bolts, screws,
and other connectors using a flat- or Phillips-head screwdriver, and a hex wrench if needed. Step
2. Pad the squeaky area with either a small board or hardcover book to change the pressure
point of a squeaky spring and eliminate the noise. Step 3. Rotate either the mattress
or box spring or both to change how the weight is distributed and, again, eliminate a pressure
point that causes the squeak. Get in the habit of regularly flipping the mattress and rotating
the box spring for even wear. Step 4. Use a spray lubricant to grease the bolts and
joints -- a squeak is usually caused by 2 pieces of wood rubbing against each other.
Step 5. Remove the box spring, gently peel back the felt cover on the bottom, and lubricate
each of the springs. Use a construction stapler to re-attach the felt backing. Ask a friend
to help to avoid injury and to make the process easier. Step 6. Replace the box spring altogether
if the squeaking persists. A new mattress and box spring will last about eight years
under normal wear and tear, and should be replaced to avoid back and hip pain later.
