(Beukelman) In this video we will be showing you eye-tracking by a woman with Lou Gehrigs disease. Can
you introduce us to Olinda a bit? (Fager) Yes Olinda is a 60-year old woman. She resides
in a skilled nursing facility. Olinda has had ALS or Lou Gehrigs disease for a number
of years and she uses eye tracking technology to support her communication.
(Beukelman) And she is going to demonstrate it to you now.
(Synthesized speech from device) This is an eye gaze computer I use it to communicate with family and friends
I also use it to read books and my bible
(Fager) And so there you have turned on your call light, right
(Synthesized speech from device) I love the eye gaze. It allows me to keep in contact with my children
(Beukelman) So you have had an opportunity to see Olinda operate using her system. What does she use this technology for?
(Fager) Olinda uses this system to support face to face communication with her family and her
staff. She also uses it extensively to access email. Through email she manages her care.
She communicates with her children who live at a distance. She communicates with her therapists,
such as myself, if she has some questions about her technology or needs some help.
(Beukelman) To learn more about Olinda, and about the technology she uses, we are referring you
to the website listed below where there are webcasts of people like her.
