Hey everybody welcome to week five of CIT-12. Hopefully you had a
great super bowl weekend. I'm recording this previous to the game so I
don't know who won, but hopefully the bay area has something to celebrate this
week. A second major championship in a year. But regardless of who won...
Week five
is a pretty standard week
kind of filled with stuff
so Sunday at midnight
our first lab disappeared so it went beyond the one week late period and it's no
longer available. And that (lab) was on the internet
so hopefully you did it
but that means if you're going to see your grades appear in my grades
the button on the left
pretty soon.
So you'll notice when you get a grade on labs
it seems a little higher than you expected
and the reason for that is
every single SimNet exam gets a five, or sorry, gets a three point bump
a ten percent
of the actual value
up to one hundred-percent
the reason for that is that there are some questions every semester that
are just a little bit bugged
You know we make suggestions, we report all the questions
that don't work and they fix some of them and they break new ones and
so there's always gonna be a couple questions that that don't work
actually it's getting a lot better I think for the internet there was only
one that didn't work, so you sort of got a two question bonus for no reason.
But regardless ten percent
a ten percent bump for all SimNet exams
that's throughout the entire semester so
you can always
count on that
anything above a ninety percent is basically a perfect score
So if you're noticing you're having problems with some of the questions
in SimNet. I've had a number of questions that have come by in the last week
people just wondering
you know, "what's going on," "this question doesn't seem to work"
one of the
sort of common solutions
is that there is just a browser incompatibility and so if you're
you know viewing SimNet in internet explorer
maybe try downloading Firefox or Google Chrome, both are really
good browsers
and tend to
to render stuff, although you may actually be using one of those other browsers
and you may want to switch back to internet explorer
I think we've found that internet explorer tends to be the most reliable
it's not my favorite browser to use for the web but a lot of companies
will test for it first because it has the dominant market share
in the browser market so
most people use internet explorer companies tend to test for what most
people use
so...
an option, a way of solving maybe a problem you're having
but again you have the bump
ten percent if you need it
this week we will be covering chapter two
which is about the internet and sort of the connectivity between
computers and it's a fairly rich chapter so be sure to look at the lecture
in the weekly content button under week five
you'll also see that there are little slides
there's a quiz
on the chapter as well as the lecture material
just liek there is whenever we cover a chapter there'll be a quiz that week
so make sure you do that
your assignment for this week is going to be exploring social networking sites
other than Facebook. It seems like for most students now
Facebook is at the same level with e-mail when people say, you know,
what do I do with the computer its
I use email and I check Facebook
and so
not that there's anything wrong with Facebook, bt sort of straying away
from that into some of these
newer things that maybe you haven't heard about, interest based social networks,
location based social networks, there's a lot of new things out
there that people are doing especially have the people are
connecting on the social networks sometimes with their smartphones as
opposed to an actual computer and so that can, that can kind of change the game
as to what's available and what kind of options you have
And so anyway, you'll explore social networking, the assignment
if you're in the face to face class will be an in-class assignment
if you're on the online class you'll see the instructions under the
week five folder
other than that
our lab this week is just the part two for windows seven
so last week we did the windows seven part one lab this week windows seven
part two
i understand the windows 8 is now out
but very few people switched over to eight yet and honestly they don't have lab
materials for windows eight it's still too brand new
that being said it is very different than windows seven
and so you know I do feel a little bad that maybe some of the things that
you're going to be learning in windows seven although they're good
concepts and you can still find similar
user interface elements
in windows eight some of those user interface elements may be going away
permanently so
it's the nature of computing
whatever I teach you today will be obsolete in a few years and then
those concepts will be obsolete and you just sort of have to keep learning throughout your
life which is
one of the reasons why I find the discipline to be quite entertaining
but anyway
so
that's our week chapter two
the assignment on social networking and be sure to do the quiz this week
and then the lab on windows seven part two
again
hopefully the super bowl went the way that
we all hoped it would
and the bay area has a few
fires to put out out of joy
anyway
have a great week and we'll see you in class or I'll see you online and in your blogs
have a great week
