I hear lots of people saying that Tom Nook is pretty greedy in the game.
But is that really the case?
And why is it that people see him in such a way? What do you think?
Hmm, well in all the games so far
when you finally manage to pay off your loan and go to speak to Tom Nook
he'll go ahead and build another extension on your house without giving you a chance to object.
So he was basically forcing you into taking a loan.
However, when you pay off your loan in New Leaf
you can decide for yourself what kind of extension you would like, so you could say that he's nicer in this respect than before.
Also, although he may seem to be greedy,
he doesn't actually take any interest on the loan.
Or give you any deadline for paying it back.
He'll just wait for however long it takes.
So from that perspective he's actually a nice character who is really trusting of everyone.
Right, I think it's a bit unfair on him to call him greedy.
Yeah.
I think there may also be a lot of people wondering why he's a tanuki.
Shigaraki ware tanuki statues are common in Japan.
They are supposed to encourage lots of people to come to your shop.
Like a kind of symbol for profitable business.
That's right, it's quite a popular belief.
Tom Nook is really just trying to have a successful business.
So rather than greedy,
maybe passionate is a better word.
There's also another point I'd like to mention related to him being a tanuki.
In Japan we have superstitions about tanukis and foxes tricking people.
Sometimes they would turn leaves into money to play tricks on people.
In Animal Crossing, furniture and other items change into leaves so you can carry them around.
This actually comes from those old Japanese stories.
