May 6 1973, Paul Simon set out on his first tour without partner Art Garfunkel. Paul used
The Jessy Dixon Singers as a back- up group on stage. Paul's tour of America and Europe
was recorded and released as 'Live Rhymin'.
May 7 1967, Jimi Hendrix played two shows at London's Saville Theatre. Ringo Starr,
Brian Jones and members of The Beach Boys and The Moody Blues were all in attendance
checking Jimi out.
May 8 1911, Born on this day, Robert Johnson, the hugely influential King of the Delta Blues.
Sharing a birthday with Robert, born on this day in 1951, Philip Bailey, vocalist supreme
with Earth Wind and Fire
May 9 1949, Born on this day, Billy Joel. And yes, it's still rock n roll to him and
we love him just the way he is.
May 10 1946, Born on this day, Dave Mason. Happy birthday Dave, hope you're "Feelin' Alright"
and born on the exact same day, and who knows...maybe the exact same hour,
Donovan Leitch, better known as Donovan. In his honor, we're all wearing something that's mellow
yellow today.
May 11 1974, members of Led Zeppelin attended an Elvis Presley show at the Los Angeles Forum
in California. After a shaky start to the song "Funny How Time Slips Away," Elvis stopped
the band and jokingly said: 'Wait a minute, if we can start together fellas, because we've
got Led Zeppelin out there, lets try to look like we know what we're doing, whether we
do or not'. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant met with Elvis after the show, spending over
2 hours with the King.
May 12 1975, Jefferson Starship gave a free concert in New York's Central Park in front
of 60,000. The band and concert sponsor, WNEW-FM, were forced to pay $14,000 for cleaning up
and damage done to the park after the event, which of course inspired the song "We Cleaned
Up This City."
