Buying a suitable car seat for your newborn is one of the most important purchases you
can make, yet it can be one of the most difficult. Whether you're driving
long distances or just round to the corner store, its vitally important your child is safely
secured in the correct child restraint. Child restraints are divided into
different categories depending on the child's age and size
If it's rearward-facing, this insert
has to actually be in here
because obviously the baby's a lot smaller
most new seats when you get them, they'll actually have an anchor point
this is the brace bar that we lift up
and as you lift it up you push it back
so it locks into place. I normally find it easier if we actually lengthen the
the belt itself
before we put the seat in
Most of the seats actually do have a protector, which does one of
two things - it helps protect the seat -
the trim of the seat, but it also stops the seat moving around too much
now what i've already actually done is to move this front passenger
seat forward
because you don't want the seat
the baby seat resting on the passenger seat
so now what I have to do, is I have to feed the
car seat belt
actually through the back of the seat
different makes of seats
will actually have slightly different
setups
in the way that the seatbelt goes through
so you will have to have a look in the instructions. What I
normally do is to take the headrests out
most vehicles you can take them out and there's a button on the side that you press in
as you press the button in, lift the headrest up and out, pass the seat belt
the child seat belt
over to the back
and it's quite important
that you don't have any twists in the belt and
on this particular car
the actual mounting point is actually on the back of the seat
so now we have to tension the belts up
if we tension the car seat belt first
that's just a simple matter of pressing down on the seat
and pulling up on the seat belt. The actual child seat belt you dont adjust
so it's very very tight - if you do that it will lift the seat up
Press the button in and
move the brace down, pull the handle out
and lift up on the back of the seat. The other thing that we have to do
is to take out this insert. When you're
putting the seat forward-facing
the seat belt where they go into a different position
and its the same again that not all seats are exactly the same way
this particular one
the seat belt goes round the back
And this seat is just a child booster seat
its quite easy to use
just a question of
again putting the rear strap
at the back of the seat
and so the same as on the other seats - just clips into the back
of the seat here
it's important to remember that your child should only progress from one
type of restraint to the next
provided that they've outgrown their current restraint
The major cause of child death or injury in car accidents occurs when a child is not
properly restrained or wearing a seat belt
parents can also be fined or receive demerit points if they're caught out without
the suitable restraints
