My name’s Tacia Williams
I’m a 3rd year student at CSUMB.
I’m from San Diego.
When I first applied for college,
I just knew I wanted to go to college.
I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it
or how I was going to pay for it.
When I heard about EOP and the Summer Bridge program
and how they help you before all the students got there,
I was going to for everything and I was really excited.
Now being a student at CSUMB after completing my 3rd year,
it has helped me just tremendously know the resources on campus.
It’s given me leadership abilities
and it’s just given me a head start from any other student that would’ve come on campus.
My education here is something I know that can’t be taken away from me
the knowledge that I get,
the skills that I get, and the confidence.
Well I’m a first generation student so my mother went to high school
and she completed high school and so did my father
but they didn’t go to a 4 year college.
When I was applying for all of this
when I was thinking about college
I knew I wanted to go,
but I wasn’t sure how to do it
because I didn’t really have my mom to ask,
“Where did you want to go to school,”
“What did you want to do with that?”
It was a little difficult at first especially financially
but being the first generation is really empowering.
I just want to graduate right now
because I know it’s going to be such a great feeling to be done
and to be able to say I completed my Bachelors degree 4 years ago or 5 years ago.
I didn’t think I would do it
because I didn’t know about financial aid
and I didn’t know about all the loans that you could get
and even though it’s a loan,
it’s an investment in the future
and I wasn’t connected to those resources before so I wasn’t thinking,
“ok well 5 years from now I’ll graduate,”
because I wasn’t sure how I was going to pay for it.”
Even if you don’t have the resources at hand
and you know them right off the bat,
you can research and you can find out and you can network
and ask people and just take every opportunity to better yourself while you’re young.
