To the Manu Korero national speech competitions now.
Today the competitions began
for the Pei Te Hurinui and Korimako sections.
The students play games to rid themselves of nerves.
But for Kimiora Kaihe-Melbourne
she watches her competition to see the standard of performances.
There are a lot of excellent Maori speakers.
This descendant of Tuhoe isn't new to this.
She won the Junior Maori section, the Rawhiti Ihaka, in 2006.
Now she is back to take the senior Maori section, Pei Te Hurinui.
I practice a lot with my father, and in front of my family.
Because she practiced a lot, she had a great speech.
I was all right. I made some mistakes, but my speech flowed.
It was fine, because I was still able to share my thoughts.
Kimiora and the other speakers are not yet finished.
Soon the impromptu section will begin.
I am so nervous about the impromptu section that I have not eaten yet.
But afterwards I will go and eat.
This lot has the task of deciding who will take out the competition.
Rapaera Tawhai, Te Karere.
