>> Hi Tom.
I've got a question for you today regarding a challenge that you might identify
for an emerging online leader in today's new eLearning environment.
Can you give me some reflections?
>> Sure. I'm Tom Reeves from the University of Georgia where I'm a professor emeritus
of learning design and technology and I think Boyer's scholarship of teaching has been
around for quite some time but with online learning the opportunity to engage faculty
and the scholarship of teaching research on their own teaching
in the online environment is just amazing because of the systems capabilities
of collecting data, all the different types of instructional design strategies
that can be incorporated into online learning like, I'm a big fan of authentic tasks.
Have the students work in real world task and the online environment, collaborative learning,
problem based learning, project based learning.
You name it, it's all possible in the online environment.
But we need to continue to do research on that and there's a wonderful opportunity
to encourage faculty to involve themselves in the scholarship
of teaching in the online environment.
>> So would you say for someone who is moving into a leadership position
within an institution they should be considering how to support faculty engagement
through the research in this field in order to connect some of the dots?
>> Absolutely.
Of course, you know, the demands for research vary by the type
of institution whether you're say, in a research intensive institution or a community college,
maybe that's a wide range but every scholar, every professor,
every faculty member should be involved in some sort of systematic research
and one of the valid types of research is the scholarship of teaching
and I think the affordances of online learning to both support innovative pedagogy,
enhanced assessment, and scholarship on the effectiveness and impact
of those are just unparalleled so I'm really excited about that aspect.
>> Thank you so much.
>> You're very welcome.
