We started the program shortly after I arrived at the University of Louisville in 1998
as a way of recognizing the valuable donation of one's body to the program,
and it's sort of built as a student generated import after that.
So we've had students participate, we've had faculty partcipate over the years,
and most recently, we've begun the last five years to invite the families of people who donated their body in the previous years.
And that has turned out to be a very moving event for the families,
and it's also good for the bequeathal program because it has a certain positive PR value
and without parties we wouldn't be able to have any of our teaching programs in tha anatomical sciences.
It's kind of a closing event.
I'm very thrilled that the university has decided to do something like this.
They didn't do anything like this when my mom died at University of Illinois in Chicago.
It's a celebration of his life and I think that he'd be very happy with that.
A person who donates their body is making the most valuable donation that anyone can.
They are donating their self to future generations and to improving healthcare.
And that's probably the most unselfish thing a person can do.
