ANNOUNCER: From our region to yours...
I'm Keith Gillard for Accessible Media.
Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world.
Soccability, a program administered by
the Alberta Soccer Association,
helps players of all ages and abilities
get a kick out of the beautiful game.
The program is the brain child of John Clubb,
Manager of Grassroots Development
at the Alberta Soccer Association.
It's not an impairment-specific program; it's open to anyone.
And we're trying to develop an option either
or challenge players, provide fun,
and where possible, develop a competitive pathway.
GILLARD: In Edmonton, Soccability takes place Monday evenings
at St. Joseph high school.
Dwayne Myrmo is one of the coaches.
He talks about what it's like
to coach players with a disability.
MYRMO: The Grassroots fundamental soccer techniques
are the same for everyone.
For whatever type of disability it might be,
there is a way to make them play.
It's amazing how good they are,
and how quickly how quickly they develop skills.
They don't just learn from that hour or two a week
that they spend on a team with a coach,
they learn from playing probably 20 hours a week
with their siblings, with their friends from school.
GILLARD: One of the athletes in the program is Steven Clayton
who told me why he loves playing soccer.
What's the most fun that you have when you come here?
STEVEN:
GILLARD: Are you tired after you're done,
or is it just so much fun that it doesn't matter?
GILLARD: Is it hard?
GILLARD: Soccability is a provincial program.
If you are interested in participating,
and would like to set up a coaching program
anywhere in Alberta, email John...
