Welcome to todays weather briefing from NWS Portland on the potential for a light snow
and freezing drizzle event later today into Tuesday.
A cold airmass remains over the region today and a weather disturbance is moving into the
area later today into Tuesday that will bring light snow or freezing drizzle to the area.
This situation will likely create hazardous travel conditions, especially for the Tuesday
morning commute. Here’s a shot of the radar imagery from
this morning, Mon, Dec 9 where we see two areas of light precipitation moving in. Also,
shown is the high temperature forecast for Monday with highs in the upper 20s to low
30s expected. Tuesday morning temperatures are expected to be in the 20s. Although the
precipitation expected with this disturbance will be light, it will fall as snow or freezing
drizzle with the potential to create hazardous travel conditions, especially Tuesday morning
in from Salem northward. These are the areas prone to freezing drizzle
or snow, stretching from Lincoln City to Ocean Park on the coast and from just north of Salem
into Portland, Vancouver and Kelso. There is also some potential for freezing drizzle
or light snow in the central Willamette Valley and Columbia River Gorge, but there is more
uncertainty for these areas. Here is a summary of impacts and forecaster
confidence levels.
Forecaster confidence is moderate for light snow or possibly freezing drizzle this afternoon.
Confidence increases slightly for freezing drizzle late tonight into Tuesday morning.
This scenario will likely create hazardous driving conditions for the Tuesday morning
commute in northern part of the forecast area, roughly from north of Salem to Cowlitz County.
There is some possibility the frozen precipitation may affect the Monday evening commute as well.
