TOM: Gloria Penner is being honored for her lifetime achievement entering the KPBS Hall
of Fame for her almost 42 of service to KPBS. Sound on Tape: Camera men on headsets, roll
tape, tapes rolling and recording, stand Gloria by>>
Tom: Gloria was the first woman to reach a management position at KPBS. She worked in
many areas of the organization and she is one who championed women’s rights and women
working in the work place. Her integrity, her work ethic, her commitment to journalism,
her commitment to civic engagement, her commitment to making sure that the community is well-informed
and ready to go the ballot box, has been second to none.
GLORIA: My career at KPBS was not a career, it was many careers. Things changed all the
time at the station and it was the change that made my years at the station first of
all go quickly, and secondly make them intriguing.
TOM: Gloria has filled many roles at KPBS serving first as our community relations director,
then our first magazine editor, then a television producer, a TV administrator, a TV radio host,
a blogger and a moderator.
GLORIA: KPBS has been more than an important part in my life. It’s been my passion. One
of the projects that really stands out in my mind, one that still continues to excite
me and I’d love to be doing it to this very day, and that is the Ballot Series. I still
meet people in the streets, people I don’t even recognize, who come up and tell me what
a special day that was, when I interviewed them when they were running for office.
TOM: When I think of Gloria and her impact at KPBS, I really want to stop a moment and
just say ‘Thank you Gloria very much, and welcome to the Hall of Fame. You truly deserve
it.’
GLORIA: Well, now that I’m in the KPBS Hall of Fame, I realize that of all the awards
that I’ve won over the years KPBS Hall of Fame is the award that I am the most excited
about. The thought that my name will forever be linked to the station and the station’s
name, and all those people who will come after me and the few that preceded me. This is more
than a delight, it is a huge honor.
