Many of my clients ask me if a detox diet is healthy. There’s a lot of information
out there about detox dieting and it can be dangerous if it’s used for weight loss.
A detox diet is primarily used to cleanse the body of toxins. It’s generally a short
term diet, I recommend, three to five days and doing it over a time when you can allow
your body to rest. So it might be over a long weekend or a time when you don’t have a
lot of activities planned. Some of the benefits of a detox diet include: increasing energy,
removing bloating, avoiding allergies, clearing headaches, improving your mood and warding
off colds and flues. There are a lot of over the counter detox products sold but I recommend
that my clients keep it simple. Basically there are three types of detox diets that
I recommend. One would be juicing, which would be simply using a juicer and juicing your
fruits and vegetables and doing that for three to five days. Another one would be, fruit
and vegetable smoothies, which would be blending them and then drinking them for three to five
days. And then the last one is just simply, raw foods and doing that for three to five
days. So, again, you really want to think about the reason why you want to go on a detox
diet, and then you want to keep it simple and stay away from buying over the counter
products.
