This video shows how to remove and replace the pick rollers and separation pad on HP
Scanjet flatbed scanners equipped with an automatic document feeder, or ADF.
The pick rollers and separation pad are important parts of the ADF. They are responsible for
separating and properly feeding pages into the scanner.
HP recommends that you replace the pick rollers and separation pad every 100,000 scans or
when indicated. Always replace the pick rollers and separation pad at the same time.
For this demonstration we are using the HP Digital Sender Flow 8500 fn1 Document Capture
Workstation with the L2725-60002 ADF Roller Replacement Kit from HP.
You can order the kit for your scanner at hp.com/buy/parts.
To begin, press and hold the Power button until the scanner turns off.
Turn to the back of the Scanjet and then disconnect the power cable.
Return to the front of the scanner. Open the automatic document feeder (ADF) hatch
by grasping the release latch on the front edge and lifting.
Carefully lift the pick roller assembly. Locate the tab on the pick roller assembly
door. Slide your fingertip behind the tab and gently
pull forward and down to open the assembly door.
While holding the door down and open, grasp the pick roller assembly on its sides. Pull
it down and slide it to the front of the scanner to release the assembly from the enclosure.
You may feel a slight resistance when sliding the pick roller assembly.
Lift the old pick roller assembly out and set it aside to be disposed of later.
Do not press down on the alignment tabs or against the tab to the right of the pick roller
assembly. Open the packaging and remove the new pick
roller assembly from the kit. Do not touch the pick rollers with bare fingers.
Doing so will leave residue on them which can lead to pick up and feeding problems.
Hold the pick roller assembly door down and out of the way while inserting the new pick
roller assembly. Slide the assembly to the right until it seats
firmly into the housing. Close the pick roller assembly door, pressing
firmly against the door until you hear a click, which indicates that the latch is seated correctly.
The pick roller replacement kit includes a replacement separation pad. Always replace
the separation pad when you replace the pick rollers.
Lift and hold the ADF input tray to access the separation pad assembly release.
Press in on the release button and lift up on the separation pad latch to remove it.
Set separation pad assembly aside to be disposed of later.
Remove the new separation pad component from the kit.
Do not to touch the separation pad with your bare fingers, because oils from your skin
could impact performance. Next, slide the rear edge of the new separation
pad into its housing. Make sure that the spring below the pad is
not bent. Do not force reassembly. If the spring is
damaged, the entire ADF assembly will have to be replaced.
Press down on the front portion of the separation pad until you hear it click, which indicates
the separation pad component is seated properly. Verify that the separation pad is positioned
correctly by pressing down on the pad with the eraser end of a pencil or similar device,
and releasing it. If the pad springs back up, this indicates
that the spring below the pad is positioned correctly.
Close the ADF hatch. You will hear a click when it is properly closed.
Turn to the back of the scanner and reconnect the power cord.
Return to the front of the scanner. Press the power button to turn on the scanner.
Finally, you need to update the product maintenance history by resetting the page counter.
Refer to your scanner's user manual for details on resetting the page counter.
