[music] Hello, I’m Dr. Neal Schultz
[pause]
and welcome to DermTV.
A lot of people think that skin cancer isn’t that serious so I’d like to
tell you some facts about skin cancer. In the United States there will be
over 1 million cases of skin cancer this year and every year and very
sadly, one American dies every hour from melanoma, the deadliest skin
cancer. A single blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence more than
doubles your chance of getting melanoma as an adult. All Caucasians who
live to the age of 65 in the United States will have a 40-50% chance of
developing either a basal cell cancer or a squamous cell cancer. And
lastly, the UVA rays, which are the rays that cause skin cancer, are the
same everywhere, all day, all the time. They’re the same all seasons and it
doesn’t matter whether it’s high noon or the early part of the day. So
remember, I don’t tell people to stay out of the sun, I tell people how to
protect their skin in the sun. Wear sunscreen all the time everyday.
