Hi. My name is Nicole Carberry. I graduated from Towson University in May 2012.
I attended the
Master of Arts in Teaching Program,
the one-year option.
I knew I wanted to be a teacher ever since I was in preschool. I would come home
every Friday and I would re-enact my week.
I would begin with throwing out the blankets so we could have nap time,
then I would have snack and start to do my favorite activities from the week.
As I got older I started to bring in what I was learning in the classroom.
I would make tests at home and I would bubble in the answers, and I would put student
names on the papers and give them grades based on whether I was liking them
or not liking them that week. As I continued to grow I started to take leadership
roles of my friends. I wanted to have them play school with me so I could be
the teacher and teach them everything that we were learning that week. I think
that's what really made me decide that I wanted to be a teacher. I chose Towson
because I heard it had a great reputation for producing great teachers.
When I graduated everyone in my cluster was able to get jobs.
So, while I was at Towson, one of my fondest memories was participating in the
gallery walk, where I was able to present data from our evidence of
student learning.
While I was presenting it we were able to take a break and hear the Maryland and
National Teacher of the Year 2011 Michelle Shearer speak.
And, she was so motivating and gave me so many good pointers for how to become
a great teacher
and she just really gave me the empowerment to want to go out there and make a
difference in children's lives.
Some of my short term goals that I really want to achieve are continuing to use
assessment to make sure I'm meeting all of the needs of my students.
I feel like that's really important because that allows me to get down and
see where they're really struggling or where they're really excelling, and make sure that
they're reaching their full potential.
My long term goal is that I would really like to become a mentor back into the
MAT Program. I could not have
gone through the MAT Program successfully without either of my mentors.
So, I really want to be able to be somebody who can coach
interns and help them get through the program and become a successful
teacher as well.
