Alendronate is a prescription medication used to treat osteoporosis and Paget's disease.
It is also used to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Alendronate is in a
class of medications called bisphosphonates. These work by preventing bone breakdown and
by increasing bone density. Alendronate comes in tablet form. It is usually
taken daily or weekly, depending on the dose, on an empty stomach with a glass of water.
There is also an liquid form. It is usually taken once weekly on an empty stomach.
