Hi, I'm Rich Lechner, Vice President of Cloud Marketing for IBM.
A lot of the hype in the marketplace around cloud has been about doing the same thing
we've been doing for decades, only cheaper, faster with more flexibility. And there's
absolutely no doubt that cloud holds the promise to allow us to do that.
But it's much more than that, we believe. We're talking about the Smarter Planet instrumented,
interconnected, intelligent systems that will change the way, not only a business works,
but an entire industry, and in fact entire societies.
In that context, what matters are data workloads and users, and the expectations of those users,
to be able to take that data, process it in new ways with a sense of immediacy and confidence,
and with rapid iteration, so that we can make this transformation that we've been talking
And of course, there are profound economic benefits to cloud, but it's much more than
that. It's about meeting new expectations.
We talk about the consumerization of IT, and the way that IT services are delivered and
consumed. And cloud is perfect for meeting those raised expectations.
So IBM thinks about cloud as part of a continuum of service delivery models. So it's not just
public cloud or private cloud. There's a lot of talk in the marketplace about the different
delivery models.
But what matters more are the services that are being delivered across those different
models and the integration of cloud into traditional legacy delivery models.
So we can help clients in a variety of ways to develop a holistic strategy to leverage
or harness cloud computing. We begin with helping them develop their strategy, building
the business case, identifying the services that make the most sense for deploying on
cloud.
Actually helping them migrate those services, and implement that cloud, whether it be a
private cloud or taking advantage of a public cloud offering or a hybrid. And then very
importantly integrating all their new cloud delivery models with their traditional service
delivery models.
And then of course, we help them address critical issues like security and privacy of data.
But moving beyond the traditional view of security, governance is also a very important
issue here.
So it's very important to help clients think about a governance strategy to allow them
to portray a single set of services out into the marketplace to their clients, whoever
they may be, and to ensure that there's not a fragmentation of the enterprise in a new
fashion, based on different delivery models being used across different parts of the business.
We can help them do that, and we're doing that every single day.
