Hello, my name is Carolyn Dean, drcarolyndean.com. I'm a medical doctor and a naturopathic doctor
and I live in beautiful Maui. I've finished my 22nd health book, I have a free newsletter
and I also have an online wellness program that you can join. And today in this series
I'll be talking about dieting. I really like the Hallelujah Diet. It's more about the mission
than the diet that I like. The story behind this raw food diet- and it is 85% raw and
15% cooked. The story behind is that a baptist minister was diagnosed with colon cancer back
in the 70's. Instead of going for chemo and radiation, a friend told him about a raw diet
and he began to drink carrot juice and eat everything raw and he cured himself and the
cancer was gone on the X-ray. And he encouraged everyone to eat everything raw and one of
the people he encouraged was his future wife, who lost about 80 pounds on the diet. So they're
married and together in 1992 they incorporated Hallelujah Acres, which was a small farm and
a restaurant and they began to spread the "gospel" of this diet. The reason I love it
is because, I grew up a Baptist. Everyone was overweight and most of the service was
praying for people in the hospital or having a bypass. And then afterwards they would have
their fellowship and eat the donuts and the cakes and everything that I believed was causing
their problems. I would always embarrass my mother and go up to the minister and say "I
thought it says in the Bible that the body being temple and that you should take care
of it. What's going on with all this junk food that you're feeding everybody?" So, what
I love about this diet- it's become a ministry for this Church and this congregation. They've
trained 5700 health ministers and they've gone out over the world to have support in
a very good healthy diet is very important. What they preach and teach about in their
diet and all raw food people seem to talk this way at some point or another is that
we were supposed to herbivores, as humans we're supposed to be herbivores because of
the way our stomach and intestines are created. The basis of how they indoctrinate people
into this diet is by saying that we were born to just eat plant products. Some people can
do this diet but some people cannot. There are some blood types, like O's, that really
don't do well on a plant-based diet. And I know, because I'm an O. But I really love
the mission of this diet and I think that this is the way that we can spread good dieting
to everybody.
