Speaker 1: There's Anthony Romero, the Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, is
in the middle of a free speech bonanza for and against same sex marriage. Inside, the
California Supreme Court is considering both sides of the case. A jumbotron screen broadcasts
the legal arguments. Outside, with his hand-held camera, Anthony documents the arguments of
public opinion. Anthony Romero: When I was a kid growing up,
there was no gay people on TV. It was almost unthinkable that gay people would ever have
the right to marry anywhere. Whether we win or lose this case, we're going to have the
right to marry, no matter what. What does your sign say? Let me see your sign.
Stop the Hate, Down with Prop 8. I don't agree with your sign, but I love the fact that you're
able to hold it up in America, it's pretty amazing, don't you think?
Speaker 2: Yes. Anthony Romero: The right to free speech has
got to be unfettered. The only response to speech you hate is more speech.
Speaker 3: I left my church [inaudible 00:01:10] I do, I could not marry a woman and have children
in that covenant with God righteously. Speaker 4: Those devil took your heart and
holding. Speaker 3: I was born....
Speaker 4: God loves you, he said... Speaker 3: ...as a homosexual.
Speaker 4: ...son [inaudible 00:01:21] Speaker 3: I am gay...because this is the
way God made me. Speaker 4: ... you know what...God died for
you would you please... Speaker 3: because this is the way God made
me. Speaker 4: God died for you would you please
repent. Speaker 5: How many white homosexuals do you
know sat on the back of the bus? Black females, black males sat on the back of the bus.
Speaker 6: But the didn't come out as gay, they couldn't come out as gay though.
Speaker 5: Let me finish. Speaker 4: It was 10 men and 10 women cannot
marry. Speaker 6: When did [crosstalk 00:01:40]
Speaker 5: No, you guys are trying to [crosstalk 00:01:46]
Speaker 7: You're animals. Anthony Romero: What do you think about the
discussion here guys? Speaker 8: What's under debate right now is
gay marriage, not polygamy , not anything that he's been talking about.
Speaker 4: Roman Chapter 1, read the whole chapter and he will tell you why we are here.
Speaker 3: I don't think he knows that. Speaker 7: When did it change? Answer me,
when did it change? Speaker 4: After Jesus came.
Speaker 7: Oh, okay, why? Speaker 9: Jesus had two fathers.
Speaker 10: Who created this earth? Who created this earth? Answer my question, who created
this earth? And how did you get over here? How did you get here? How did you get here,
a man and a women? Who created this? Who created us? How did we get here? [crosstalk 00:02:29]
Speaker 5: Let's talk, let's be gracious to our friends. We can talk quietly. [crosstalk
00:02:36] Speaker 4: You have no future.
Speaker 7: Whoa, whoa, oh my God. [crosstalk 00:02:40]
Speaker 9: I have no future? Excuse me I'm going to *** medical school, good luck
with that one. Speaker 4: Future is the kids. [crosstalk
00:02:46] A man and a woman. You are a very handsome man [crosstalk 00:02:49] You're going
to have a beautiful life. Speaker 7: I'm not trying to be [inaudible
00:02:55] [crosstalk 00:02:58] What if I believe in him and I'm gay?
Speaker 4: No. Speaker 7: Oh why?
Speaker 4: But... Speaker 7: It's says [inaudible 00:03:02]
of the world that he gave his one and only son, whoever believes in him.
Speaker 4: Okay. Speaker 7: What if I believe in him and I'm
gay? [crosstalk 00:03:09] Adultery is sex outside the marriage. So why don't you let
us marry so we can have sex inside the marriage? Speaker 4: It's even worse. It's even worse.
[crosstalk 00:03:16] Speaker 7: That's what adultery is, then let
us marry so we don't commit adultery. [crosstalk 00:03:23]
Speaker 4: God's work is alive. Speaker 9: Really? Because you're not showing
it. Love God, love one another. [crosstalk 00:03:29]
Speaker 4: This is why I'm here, because I love you honey.
Speaker 3: It sounds like you're so angry with us. [crosstalk 00:03:34].
Speaker 9: Not if you're trying to shut us down.
Anthony Romero: What's your name? Speaker 9: [Karishan 00:03:36].
Anthony Romero: I love it. I love you're sign. I love your energy.
Speaker 9: Thanks. Anthony Romero: I love the fact you're in
medical school and you keep fighting. Speaker 11: [inaudible 00:03:46] looking back
at [inaudible 00:03:48]. Then as you trace the case law through it.
Speaker 12: Well simply it uses the word restore to simply restore, I would say simply [crosstalk
00:03:57]. Anthony Romero: America isn't about letting
the wind of the majority determine the right of the minority. The great thing is that we
can debate it for the courts have their essential role. If they, the courts have deferred to
public opinion on any civil rights laws, we wouldn't have come as far as we have.
Do you know the ACLU at all? Do you know about the American Civil Liberties Union?
Speaker 13: No. Anthony Romero: No? We're an organization
that's 89 years, has been fighting for the right of people to express themselves and
defending the rights of all people. Speaker 14: I don't want to get married yet,
but I do want to have the option. Speaker 13: I just think it's right to be
able to marry who you want. Anthony Romero: It's pretty amazing that in
America, you get to hold up signs like this, you know.
Speaker 14: Yeah, anywhere else, you'd get shot.
Anthony Romero: Anywhere else, you'd be shot, right.
Speaker 13: Yeah.
