>> DARREN: Hi I’m Darren Kennedy and I’ here at Matalan HQ to meet with their senior design team to give me the inside track on what’s hot for spring/summer.
Mags, tell me, what is your role here at Matalan.
>> MAGS: I’m employed to be the design manager for the homewear team and we design the homewear product that goes into stores season after season.
>> DARREN: And how about the colour pallet?
>> MAGS: There are trend prediction tools that we have available for us, we use trend prediction houses and they look ahead, years and seasons ahead, and they inform us what the really important colours that we need to use.
Also important trends, important themes, for instance what we’ve been working on in homewear is this natural collection, botanics is really important.
>> DARREN: Just looking at it you can see lots of greens, limes and natural tones.
>> MAGS: We found that our customers really like green, very natural soft colours.
>> DARREN: In terms of peoples current interiors, if they wanted to add a couple of pieces, just to jazz it up and give it a sense of freshness , what would you recommend?
>> MAGS: I think some of the cushions we have in the range are just brilliant, there a really good buy and you’ll see them all through the summer.
We’ve got some lovely botanical motifs, we’ve got some lovely bits of colour in there, lovely fresh limes, natural basis as well and we’ve got some botanical prints on patchwork cushions, which I think is really nice.
We’ve got some great sort of vases and glasswear and the owl phase is just something to buy I think.
This is my favourite piece in the collection. I love the owl vase, its quirky, its fun and its quite humorous and it’s a real important motif, coming through fashion and now coming into homewear as well.
>> DARREN: Well I hope that’s got you excited for spring/summer and if you would like some more inspiration on what’s coming up this season, make sure to log onto this week’s Kat’s Closet.
