Fear, Confusion, Feeling lost. These are the feelings of women at the center
of a difficult decision: choosing to abort or not abort a baby with disabilities based
on a prenatal test. Far too often are women misinformed, or even misdirected by their
doctors into making a decision about their baby without really learning about the options.
Doctors are to give the patient the option to abort if the result of the prenatal test
shows a genetic anomaly. The number of prenatal tests being administered is growing and so
is the introduction of new technologies allowing non-invasive techniques and more accurate
results. Within the next three years, prenatal tests will become more and more routine for
pregnant women, leaving what to do after the diagnosis up to them to decide.
“Noninvasive blood tests can now diagnose Down syndrome and other trisomies during a
women’s first trimester with 99% accuracy” –The Atlantic
