Hi. I'm Carol Fox. You can find me at Carolina Small Town Living. If you think
that Charlotte North Carolina has no historical sites, come with me on a visit
to the James K. Polk historic site, James Polk was our eleventh president and he
was born here on a small farm.
I visited the site recently during a living history event showing how
Christmas was celebrated in backcountry
Charlotte in eighteen o one.
The site has a two-room house and a tavern.
In the tavern, costumed interpreters were cooking over an open fire.
In the house, they explained what life was like on a small farm.
Neither building is original but they and the furnishings are period pieces
from the early eighteen hundreds.
Other interpreters played period music and children played games typical of the early
nineteenth century.
A visitor's center at the site includes exhibits about backcountry farm life in
Charlotte and Mister Polk's presidency. Admission is free. If you would like to
know more about living in Charlotte and its small towns, visit my website at
Carolina Small Town Living or give me a call.
