Michelle Mazza Froese (MU Student & Auxiliary Services Public Relations Manager): The Memorial Tower is the second most photographed, iconic image on our campus, second to the columns.
When it was constructed in the 20s by the architects Jamison and Spruill, it was purposely chosen to do a collegiate gothic.
And what they wanted it to look like was Universities in England, to make it seem like a much older campus than it really was.
And you get that sense when you see the building and when you walk around it.
I think one of the most wonderful things about Memorial Union is that it was built at the request of students and alumni as a war memorial for WWI dead.
So there are 117 names inscribed under the arch of Memorial Tower.
And the tradition is that when you walk beneath the tower you speak in hushed tones, or if you have a hat you take off your hat, because it’s a sacred place and there are many people who view it as such.
Kristina Gentile (Missouri Student Union Ambassador): We check out computers, that’s one of the big things we do at the desk.
We basically just try to answer any questions that students have, or parents that are visiting with incoming freshman or anything like that.
If you go down the hall a little bit there are some couches and stuff.
A lot of students tend to sleep in there. In between classes they take some naps.
Any of the rooms in here are for student events, and we have those happening all day.
Anyone can really rent them out, we had a wedding in here on Saturday – we actually had two weddings in here.
There’s also Starbucks and Wheatstone Bistro, if you just want to grab food or coffee in between classes.
Froese: And there are other little nooks and crannies all over the place for students to study, but we also have a lot of resources like Disability Services and MU Veterans Affairs Office, the MSA/GPC Craft Studio.
So there are a lot of places for students to go. It is the hub of Asian affairs and the International Center. So there are a lot of things students can utilize.
Gentile: Students can get really like anything here. We will mostly check out anything that we can.
We have cell phone chargers, where you can live your phone with us and we have a little charging pad to put it on.
If you give us your ID we will let you check out pens and scissors, and anything we have really.
All of the rooms can be reserved. You have to go through reservations and you do it all online, so it’s super easy.
