Narragansett Turkey. The Narragansett Turkey is a cross between
the Eastern Wild Turkey and the domestic turkey brought to Colonial America by English and
European colonists back in the 1600's. It’s named after Narragansett Bay in Rhode
Island. The Narragansett turkey, or Naggs as they’re
known, have dark feathers with a steel-gray tinge. They resemble the Bronze turkey but
have feathers of gray or dull black rather than the Bronze Turkey's distinctive coppery
coloring. The breed has an excellent temperament and
calm disposition. They mature early, are good egg producers
and have excellent meat. They take longer to mature to eating weight
than commercial turkeys, but the extra time allows the meat to develop more flavor.
Improved over generations through selective breeding, young Narragansett Turkey toms weigh
22-28 pounds and hens about 12-16 pounds. This information is based on Andrew Grey's
