Among the many attractions at the Canadian Museum of Nature are its popular mammal dioramas.
One highlight is this bison fending off a pack of wolves.
But the Museum has another bison that is hidden away from visitors
at its research and collections building in Gatineau, Quebec.
This taxidermy mount of a Wood Bison is a holotype --
the single specimen that was used when the wood bison was formally described way back in 1897.
The Wood Bison is a subspecies distinct from the better known Plains Bison.
The holotype is so valuable as a scientific reference,
that it spends its days stored in the Museum's fur vault.
The cool, climate controlled-environment protects it from damage due to excessive light and heat.
Today, the Wood Bison is a threatened species but making a comeback in the wild.
Its legacy will endure with this treasure preserved by the Canadian Museum of Nature.
