In the last video, we told you about how we'll be moving Tanki onto the high-performance
Unity engine.
Besides the advantages we've already mentioned, Unity also makes it possible to simultaneously
develop the game on PC, mobile devices and consoles.
If we tried to do this in Flash, we would have to rewrite the game from scratch.
Instead, Unity allows us to use existing technology to make the game available on all sorts of
devices.
With a new version of Tanki Online just over the horizon, our challenge is for the new
Tanki to be also available on your smartphones and tablets, keeping the same graphics and
playability, but optimized to require no more than 200 megabytes of RAM to function perfectly.
We will do this by using technologies that will require less resources to produce the
same image quality.
For example, instead of dynamic lighting and SSAO, we'll be using lightmaps, projected shadows
and LODs. We'll also make scenery less detailed.
Our benchmark devices will be iPhone 4s and Samsung Galaxy S2. Tanki will work perfectly
on these, or higher-end devices.
We also intend to maintain a unified game environment.
You will be able to access your account from any of your devices.
You will be able to play at home, then take your phone with you for a walk and continue
the battle there.
We are investing a lot of effort into creating an interface that allows you to control your
tank on your phone, as easily as on your PC.
But it's all yet to come. Stay tuned!
