The winner of the School Pathways Award is
Moranbah State High School. It's such an honour to be
recognised tonight and it makes all the years of
hard work pay off. The perseverance. We've done a lot of things that are new and
has been a struggle for people to understand when you want to do something a little bit different
and it really makes it all pay off to be recognised at this level. Some of the challenges that we face
are definitely the geographical isolation that we have in Moranbah. We are not in a major
city. We are a regional city. We have a mining industry on our doorsteps
but that is something who is normally run from a Brisbane office so we are working with our industry constantly.
We have a range of programs. We have the mining industry on our doorstep but not all
our students want to go into the mining industry so we've had to make sure our pathways
provide for the students that want to go into retail, business, hospitality
hairdressing. Whatever our students want to do our aim is to make sure
we can provide them a pathway to lead them along the direction
that they'd like to take. Our program helps provide apprentices coming out
into their first year that are well above a normal school leaver. Our kids are work ready.
They are ready to get on the job and they know what they're doing. They're not a safety risk, they're ready
to work on the first day.
