Thank you to the City Club, to those of you who are here today, and those who are listening
on the broadcast. Today was a great opportunity for the three of us to share our views, but
let me make clear: this election is about more than the three of us as candidates. It’s
about all Oregonians who right now are struggling just to get by. To provide for themselves
and their families in these difficult economic times. And its about those who work hard and
play by the rules but are feeling insecure about their retirement, the future of their
children, and the direction of our country. This special election comes at a time when
people are losing faith in Congress, and worse, we’re running out of time to restore that
faith. At his moment in history, I have something to offer. My record and my reputation are
based on the ability to get things done without being divisive or offensive. And I will never
forget, even as I wade through all the complicated parts of legislation, that I’ll be making
decisions that are affecting people’s lives. I’ve never lost sight of that. It’s how
I’ve conducted myself throughout my entire career and it’s exactly what Congress needs
right now. We must put aside our differences and come together in every way that we can
to renew a sense of progress and faith in our country. If my grandparents were here
today I believe that they woulds say that “We the People” is more than just a concept,
it’s something that we live each and every day. For Ferdinando and Leonetta Bonamici
it was worth crossing the ocean for, and for us it’s worth fighting for now. So for past
generations, and for future generations, please don’t forget that it’s often the most
important outcomes that are dependent on simple things, like remembering to vote. This is
a critical moment not only for our economic future, but for our democratic future. Voting
is indeed the fundamental act of continued faith in our democracy, and I’m respectfully
asking for your vote. Thank you.
