If you're a new team leader or if this is the first time that
you've lead or even if you're a seasoned leader, there's
always things that we could do.
You're in the continuous improvement business when
you're working on a NICHQ project.
And I think it's critical as an individual leader for you
to adopt that as a practice for yourself.
So here's some things that you can do to make sure that you
continue to improve and grow as a leader.
The first thing I invite you to do is to write a personal
mission statement.
You can Google those, and there will be many, many
models for you to use.
But in short, a personal mission statement is a place
for you to document your values, your beliefs, and your
philosophies about leadership.
And make sure to write down things that you don't want to
tolerate as a leader.
Creating an environment of respect to around you is
critical to your success.
The other thing that I always say is that feedback is the
breakfast of champions when you're leading.
So make sure that you surround yourself with people who will
speak to you directly about how they're experiencing you
and observing you as a leader.
And if you're really brave and courageous, ask people what is
it like to have me as the team lead on this project.
The other thing that I would invite you to do would be
actively engage in self-reflection.
Get yourself a journal, and start to document times when
you're leading that you feel incredibly successful.
And be very specific about what you did.
But also muster the courage to document times when you felt
very challenged as a leader.
Write down what was challenging you, how you went
about getting over that challenge, and some things
you'll use to make sure that challenge
doesn't affect you again.
