Welcome to the Mosaic Postcards from Mercury portion of the MESSENGER
Education and Public Outreach website.
You'll see the site is divided into two areas.
On the right is the Mosaic Postcards Surface Interactive side.
By clicking on the surface interactive
side you will learn
about Mercury's surface and processes that have changed through time.
You will be exploring data and imagry captured by the MESSENGER spacecraft.
Here you will see several orange flags
Note that these are the features that have been made into Mosaic postcards from
the print side of this web area.
Upon mouseover you can see the name
and type of feature for that flag.
We will select one of these, but first let's expand it to the full-screen view
here in the lower right corner.
This can be exited at anytime using the esc key.
After selecting the flag
for Derain, we will zoom into that feature
to learn much more about it.
For example
in this top section we can see close-up images of this feature
and others across Mercury that are similar to this feature.
We can learn about terrain and dark matter on Mercury in this text area
which can be extended by clicking on "more".
The craters on mercury are named after famous deceased artists.
To learn about the artist for which this crater is named
click on "Who is Derain?"
and then to return to the main landing page for this feature
on "close".
Dwn near the bottom you can see the grid space
and the front and back from the mosaic postcards which this feature
corresponds.
These mosaic postcards are available on the "print side" of this website,
accessed by clicking on "Home" in the upper right part of the page.
On the right side
of the surface interactive pages you can see where you are exploring on
this map view of Mercury which is indicated by the larger blue flag.
The orange flags throughout the planet are other locations where in this case
dark materials occur on Mercury.
You can see the distribution throughout the planet by clicking on these areas to
spin the planet.
Soon you will be able to click on any of these orange flags to learn much more
about them as you learned about Derain here.
You can explore more dark materials on Mercury by clicking on the image gallery
link,
which opens a new tab or a new window of the messenger website image gallery.
You'll need to get out of full-screen mode in order to see it.
In this case it is as if you had searched for "dark materials"
so you will see all gallery postings related to Mercury's dark
matter.
By clicking on "New Selection"
you can learn about the other features of Mercury by selecting a different
orange flag.
Notice that you can spin the planet and soon many of these great flags will be
orange so you can select them as well.
That sums up the mosaic postcard surface interactive side of the website
click on "Home"
to go back to the main home screen
to learn about how to use the print side of the mosaic postcards from mercury web
environment.
