In the literature of humor studies, and yes, there's such a thing called humor studies.
[laughing] People always ask me about that. I have to explain a lot.
Um, [laughing], um within the literature of humor studies
there is one concept of humor called self-deprecation humor.
So, self biting humor. And, an explanation for that is
that in conflict situations or in situations where, you know,
people are faced with trouble and things like that or crises,
humor helps you to defend, first, your psychology - your self, your identity.
So, by mocking yourself first, you prevent your enemy or the opponent
to mock you first. So, it's, you know, a self-defensive mechanism.
But then we will say that the other factor is fear.
Because, you know, fear is the core of human beings.
Really, otherwise we wouldn't have religions. So, fear is the core
of, you know, identity, of human psychology.
So, humor has this impact on overcoming fear.
And, sometimes, just to, you know, see yourself as small. Because when you're mocking yourself,
your self becomes small, and just to see yourself as small, the world became, you know,
the world that looks ugly, the world that looks, you know, not very nice to live in,
became quite OK, yeah. So that's how it's been discussed in humor literature.
