>> Heidi Brown: The field of female pelvic medicine
and reconstructive surgery is a subspecialty field within obstetrics
and gynecology, and also within urology.
So we have a very unique focus where we combine sort of two specialties
to provide this focused care for the pelvic floor.
And urnigynecology specifically
for female pelvic medicine reconstructive surgery is the only field
that combines disorders of the bladder, the *** and the *** and ***.
So we're really dealing with this whole bowl of muscles of the pelvic floor whereas
if you just see a gastroenterologist, they're only going to deal with the GI part of things.
So we have a unique expertise in all of the systems that are going on in the pelvic floor.
This is all we do.
We're not dealing with menopause,
we're not dealing wit skin changes of the external genitalia.
All we do is prolapse, incontinence and female pelvic reconstructive issues.
The vast majority of the surgeries that we do are done on an outpatient basis,
meaning that women come in on the morning of surgery, have a surgery that lasts an hour
or two, recover for an hour or two and are home by the afternoon.
There are some women who have been so devastated by their pelvic floor disorders
that they're no longer going shopping, they're no longer playing bridge
with their friends, they're no longer going running.
They've eliminated so many activities from their lives and then they come in and see us
and we get them on a treatment regiment that works, and then they come back and they say,
"Oh my God, I wish I saw you ten years ago.
It's like I have my life back."
And it's -- that's the best part of what we do.
