Ohio State University Extension. What does it mean? What do you get? It means, you get
a link no matter where you live to Ohio State, to the knowledge they have, and how it can
help you. How? Through healthier people, and happier families. Safer food, and sounder
finances. More new jobs, and growing business. Greener farms, and a cleaner environment.
And simply, good kids and communities. That's what we deliver. Here's how we started: The
U.S. Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890 set up the national land grant system. Ohio State is
the land grant university in Ohio. Higher education, especially in agriculture and technical
sciences, now became widely available. The Smith Lever Act of 1914 went further. It gave
higher ed a new mission: outreach. A charge to deliver a university's knowledge straight
to the people who need it. To folks who can put it directly to use. Extension services
in each state in an overarching national extension system came about. In Ohio, that's us. OSU
Extension. At first, we worked mostly with farmers. Extension agents shared new research
aimed at growing better crops. Which it did, like gangbusters. Today we keep that mission
before us, outreach, and making Ohio even better. But the audience we serve has expanded,
just as Ohio has. It's rural yes, but urban too, and also suburban. So we target our work
in four impact areas. As we carry out our mission, as we deliver programs that deliver
knowledge straight to the people of Ohio: decisions get smarter. Jobs get better, and
the state's economy gets better and stronger. It gets even better to live here. Employers
know this. They know the power of OSU research, of OSU outreach, and like to partner with
us when they want to grow their business. Community leaders know it too. They partner
with us as well. They value our knowledge, our impartial science, the deep wide knowledge
we draw on. Smarter people eat better, raise healthier, smarter kids, grow better food,
and have more and better job opportunities. Which is good for Ohio. We call it Empowerment
through education. Stop in at one of our offices. Visit us at extension.osu.edu. Or find us
