Jingle: Atlantic Dermatology ooo you're looking good!
Dr. Crane: Hello, my name is Jonathan Crane and with Atlantic Dermatology Associates.
We're located in Wilmington, North Carolina, and I'm here to talk about moles today. Many
people have moles over their body, and moles are very normal but sometimes moles will begin
to turn in a bad direction. You pop up with a new mole suddenly, or you could have a mole
that's asymmetrical, meaning one half doesn't look the same as the other; jagged border,
meaning rather than a circular border, it has notches in it; several colors, because
more than one color could be a problem; diameter larger than a pencil eraser or larger than
6mm, or a mole that is evolving or changing. Any of those five features could be a problem
for you. Now everybody, on a monthly basis should be looking themselves over head to
toe. On a yearly basis, you should be seeing your dermatologist. In between that yearly
check, any mole that has any of those five features then go ahead and at that point call
your dermatologist and get in. If you do have a mole that's changing in a bad direction,
if you catch it early no big deal. If its turned into a melanoma, or if you have a melanoma
suddenly pop up, still not a big deal unless you let it go. And if you let it go then it
could turn deadly, so really make sure that you're watching your moles on a monthly basis,
being examined by a dermatologist on a yearly basis, and anything that's changing go in
and see your dermatologist sooner. Thank you!
