This is a short presentation on using eBooks at CDU.
To start searching for eBooks select the Library tab at the top of the CDU home page.
CDU Library subscribed to over one hundred thousand eBooks in a variety of subjects
including law and business
The Library has access to eBooks through different providers
Different eBook providers have
different conditions of use
for example some will have different loan times
and some eBooks will have a limited number of users
if he had trouble accessing an eBook
Please Ask Us at the Library.
There are two different ways to search for eBooks
You can either search using the main Summon search box
or click on the eBook link.
use the eBook link
when you know the title of the item
for example
it was looking for the Law of Armed Conflict
I could type the title straight in
and then hit the search button.
the eBook I was looking for
is the first result.
to access the item
just click on the full text online link.
You will then be asked to login with you username and password.
It is the same password that you use to login to other Library databases or LearnLine.
I can see that this eBook is hosted by EBL.
On the main page here I get information about the book.
As well as a short description.
As well as other publication details.
On the left hand side I can read the book online just by clicking the link.
From here I can read the book just as I would a hard copy.
To read through the pages I can either scroll using my mouse.
Or use the arrow button at the top.
I can also read it in PDF format.
Use the inbuilt dictionary or get the book read aloud to me.
I can also print and copy.
Just be aware that most eBook providers have inbuilt digital rights management systems.
This means the book will only allow you to copy a certain amount of text.
Usually up to 10%.
On the left hand side a get a table of contents for the book.
I can then flick through to relevant chapters.
Also on the left hand side
is the ability to hide the contents you're reading online.
You can also search within the book.
Download notes about a particular chapter.
Or download the book.
Lets go back to our search results and look at the download options.
Later on we will look at different software that you will need to download to different devices.
In this case I have downloaded Adobe
Digital Additions
and therefore I should be able to download it straight away.
Click on the download button.
From here you can download Adobe Digital Additions for some items.
However later on we will look at all the different options.
Underneath I can select the loan length.
For this book I can only loan it for 1-3 days.
Other books will have longer loan periods.
After your loan length has expired
you will then have to download the book again to read it.
For this example the only format available for this book to download is PDF.
Then select
download.
I can now open the book with Adobe Digital Additions.
Let's have a look at other eBook examples.
Another way to search for eBooks is to use the Summon search box.
This is a good way to search for eBooks when you don't know the title of the book.
but you are looking for a general category
or subject area
for example if I was looking for the term financial management
I could type the search terms straight into the search box.
From the top I can select only to search for book.
And then select search.
I now get a list of physical books and online books.
If I am only looking for online books
I can refer my results to only full-text online.
I now get a list of eBooks online about financial management.
This first one here we can see that there are two links.
This is because there are two different providers providing access to this book.
Lets select the first one.
The first link takes us to EBL copy of the book.
Lets have a look at the second link.
This second link takes us to the Ebsco Host eBook collection.
We can see in the left-hand side
this book can only be read full-text online.
It can't be downloaded by this provider.
Lets go back to our result list.
This time I'm going to select Focus on Financial Management.
This eBook link then takes me to the eResource portal. To access the book
just click on the link again.
I now get access to the book that I can read online.
Notice this one from Ebsco Host
also has a download option.
Another difference with using Ebsco host is that to download a book you must logon using
you Ebsco host account.
If you don't have an account you can create one.
Its free.
To download, select the download button.
From here you can either create an account.
Or sign in using an account you have already created.
I use the same password as my staff username and password to avoid confusion.
I now get the option to download, from here I can download up to 7 days.
Ebsco also gives me options to download Adobe Digital Editions.
And Bluefire reader for Apple and Android devices.
As well as options for Kindle.
Then select check out and download.
I can then open with Adobe Digital Editions.
To check what other books are in my Library
just click on the books link.
In the Adobe Digital Editions Library
I can see what books are checked out
and for how long I have them.
This book here has expired.
To get rid of it, just select the little arrow icon, and then delete.
Now lets go back to the Library home page to learn more about downloading eBooks.
To get more information about eBooks see our eBook guide.
Go to subject LibGuides.
And then search for eBook.
Then select the eBook guide.
From here you get more information on using eBooks.
Including information about different eBook providers.
For example as well as subscribing to EBL and Ebsco host we also subscribe to
Ovid eBooks.
That cover eBooks in the area of nursing and health.
You can conduct a direct search of that collection here.
We also have access to engineering books and pharmacy books.
At the top we also have information on troubleshooting
Which includes a video demonstration of downloading
eBooks from Ebsco host.
And also information about problems incurring with Vista and Adobe Digital Editions.
To find out what software you need to download access the eBooks
click on the QUT LibGuide link.
If you are using a Staff computer
remember that you can download Adobe Digital Editions
From the install CDU software link.
Just go to your computer icon.
all programs
and install CDU software.
Student computers in the Library do not contain Adobe Digital Editions.
And therefore you cannot download eBooks onto a student computer.
You can however download an eBook on to your personal device.
Just check the guide and download the relevant software.
Usually Adobe Digital Editions
for most PC's
Just use the guide for other devices.
such as Sony and Kindle
and Apple devices.
