This cover of Time Magazine from June 11, 1973,
shows a chestnut brown horse peering out at the reader.
Born on Meadow Farm in Caroline County, Virginia, on March 30, 1970,
Secretariat from the start showed promising signs of becoming a powerful racehorse.
The final race in the Triple Crown, the lengthy Belmont Stakes,
was to be Secretariat's most difficult task.
Although there hadn't been a Triple Crown winner in 25 years, principle owner
Penny Tweedy put all of her faith in the young horse and was determined
that he would be the next Triple Crown champ.
She was not disappointed.
On June 9, 1973, Secretariat sprinted the entire one and a half miles
of dirt track, literally leaving his opponents in the dust.
He won by an astounding 31 lengths, and ran faster than any horse ever had
on a one and a half mile dirt track.
