THE CALCEDEAVER VOLUNTEER FIRE
AND RESCUE DEPARTMENT NEEDS TO
COME UP
WITH 15 THOUSA , TO PAY FOR A
NEW TRUCK VOLUNTEERS SAY IS
NEEDED.
< James Meadows is one of 25
people who serve as a volunteer
firefighter for the Calcedeaver
community. It's situated down
the winding roads of Highway
96 not far from Mt. Vernon.
Meadows says this department is
a necessity when seconds count.
"In this area you have nothing
but us. If there is a medical
emergency they call us
first. We're their first link
if time is of the essence." In
the
past wildfires have swept
through here putting families in
danger as the crackling fire
moves
closer. While you can't put a
price tag on saving lives -
it is safe to say it is
expensive. "Don't have enough
money to operate.
Basically set up on a tax in
this district that has not gone
up in five years. Brings in 15
thousand dollars to cover
equipment, gas, mortgage on this
place,
gear." Some equipment such as
this 400 gallon truck was
donated to the Calcedeaver
Volunteer
Fire and Rescue department. The
rest like this $30 thousand
dollars worth of
gear is bought with grant money.
The department recently received
another grant
and will soon be the proud owner
of a one thousand galloon truck.
Here's the problem... the
department still owes 15
thousand dollars on
the vehicle which will be
delivered November 1st. It's
hosting a gospel concert in
hopes of
raising the cash. "Spend 15
thousand get a 200 thousand
truck, is money well spent."
"Meadows says something else to
think about for the future is a
place to store their equipment.
Right now its scattered around
two different
locations." And when seconds
count Meadows says it helps to
have everything in one place.
