>> Thomas >> So Keith you visited our school and you
sound very supportive of our innovative approach of learning. Would you encourage the four
hundred teachers here today to implement our system? Take the risk to implement it in their
school, their classrooms? >> DECD Chief Executive Keith Bartley
>> I’d love to see, I really would love to see more schools and more teachers have
the opportunity to be able to work in that very flexible way that you’ve developed
at Birdwood High School. When I say you’ve developed, although Steve as the Principal
has led that, actually I think he’s learnt most from the Yr 8s and Yr9s; that first cohort.
So I’d love to see more students having the opportunities to explore their own learning
potential in the way you’ve been able to do that.
>> On the other hand I do recognize, and I think your question hints at that, it is a
risk, and stepping into different ways of organizing schools and organizing school curricula
are things that are not to be done lightly. You have to plan to take people with you carefully.
I guess I just believe that in exploring boundaries, in taking risks, the greatest potential for
advancement lies.
