To make a documentary? It’s what I’d done. I’d made documentaries on the radio. I’d
made a lot of documentaries on the radio. For NPR. On alcoholism, domestic abuse, aging
in America 13 part series. What I wanted to do was to make a documentary about being disabled.
And I called up NPR and they said…here I’ve got all these awards and everything…and
they said well if you get it made we’ll listen to it. They weren’t gonna give me
any money. And they probably weren’t even gonna listen to it because I’d done a piece
for them on the priests in El Salvador with the voice of the priest that got killed. And
they didn’t even want to listen to it.
I was laying in a hospital bed when I woke up from the coma and the first thing I thought
about was making a documentary. It took me years to get it funded. And then PBS didn’t
want to let me do another one. It’s a lot of resistance against knowing about disability
in this culture, you know. Unless in certain, how we help those people kind of stuff…that’s
ok.
