JENNA: Hi, its Jenna and we are back here at Lincoln
Center in New York City. This is our fall 2014 show.
One of the most challenging things about creating a new line is always finding ways to make
it feel special.
TOM: Hi, This is Tom.
We are experimenting a lot with new materials and fabric techniques.
We took things like tweeds and we bonded them with neoprenes which helps give the silhouettes
a more exaggerated shape. We're also playing a lot with the idea of
contrast specifically with softness and structure. With the palette being as moody as it was
this season, we thought that adding a little touch of gold would really pop.
JENNA: If you are already familiar with J.Crew you
know that we like to pair sparkle with tweed. This year we put it all in one garment - its
a pre-mix.
TOM: We love taking something classic like denim
and making it more technical. We bonded denim to denim to create this Mackintosh-style coat.
JENNA: Oftentimes I'm asked about the DNA of J.Crew
and I always refer to menswear. By taking a clean line that you might find
in a menwear tailored jacket it allows us to open the door to anything.
TOM: Our floral prints took a really new direction
this season. They almost look like dutch master paintings.
We're excited to continue our collaboration with Sophia Webster. What we love about her
shoes is her ability to mix interesting fabrications together.
FRANK: Hi, This is Frank.
And what you see here is really a team effort. The whole design process is very fluid because
we all hold the same design interests. We're always interested in vintage and historical
garments, we have this really, beautiful popover, all the details on that garment are historical,
but we updated the materials. We like to be inspired by garments you might
recognize as something your dad or granddad wore.
JENNA: Something that feels new again this season
is the influence of sport. We made some of those sport elements feel more personal by
putting a graphic message on them. One of the things you don't get to see when
you are out in front with all of the beautiful models standing on the stage is all of the
people behind the scenes making it come together. Hi Mark. Hey Gayle. Hi Mellissa.
And one of my favorite parts is at the end, when the lights come up, and all the girls
are lined up, and the guys are on the opposite side.
And for that brief moment you think: "Wow, we did ok"
Thank you everyone.
