Grandpa’s in the nursing home and he’s at risk for falling. What preventions should
the nursing home have in place in order to keep Grandpa from falling? I’m James Kapralos,
an attorney with Parker Waichman. Some standard and simple interventions would be proper supervision,
bed alarms, chair alarms, low beds, and to prevent injuries from falls, floor mats. These
are just basic, simple interventions and there are many more. One of the interventions that
you might not be familiar with is the bed alarm. The bed alarm is designed to work by
placing a clip on Grandpa’s back and once Grandpa lifts off the bed – ever so slightly
– the clip falls off and the bed alarm sounds. The nursing home staff, once they hear that
alarm, is supposed to rush in and prevent Grandpa from getting out of bed. Preventing
Grandpa from getting out of bed prevents him from walking around unsupervised. It can also
prevent falls if the nursing home staff gets there quick enough. That’s just one simple
and effective intervention that you may want to ask your nursing home about if Grandpa
is susceptible to falling. You may be in a situation where Grandpa is at risk for falling
or has even fallen in a nursing home. If you have any questions, pick up the phone and
call me because I do this type of work every single day and I’ll be happy to help you
if you have any questions. I’m James Kapralos, an attorney with Parker Waichman.
