Sandstorms obscure north China. For the second time in less than two weeks, sand from the
Gobi Desert blew across the Mongolia-China border, blanketing much of northern China
on Wednesday night, May 11. The yellow dust disrupted transportation in many parts of
the region on Thursday, reducing visibility in some parts of Inner Mongolia to 100 to
300 meters. Stating that the air quality was hazardous, the local weather bureau urged
people to stay indoors with windows closed, and to wear masks should they have to go out.
While the sandstorm was forecast to abate, the nation's meteorological service stated
that ongoing torrential rains in the south were expected to continue.
Our appreciation, Chinese officials, for your precautionary measures to protect public health.
Our prayers that such potentially harmful weather conditions are eased as we take kinder
care of our planetary abode.
