Laura (thinking): It's so nice to be moved in. Ooo I'm going to check my email. What's
this about? Student refundÉwhat's that? Hmm Whatever.
Laura (thinking): Oooh i got an email from stubhub, I love that group. I'm gonna see
how much tickets are? Oh those are awesome!
Irresponsible Conscience: (I) Didn't you just see an email about refunds? That means money...
Responsible Conscience: (R) Wait, shouldn't you be using that money for books?
Laura (thinking): Lemme look at this email again. Check your student account. Direct
deposit into your bank account in 3 to 5 days.
Irresponsible Conscience: (repeats) 3 to 5 days!
Laura (thinking): tickets, student account, books.... (repeats a several times & gets
louder)
(Laura Screams)
(Laura takes a deep breath)
Laura (thinking): I should just calm down and look at that email again.
Laura (thinking): What is this refund? Why do I have it? Where did it come from? What
am I supposed to do with it?
Responsible Conscience: Remember you can always ask customer service.
Irresponsible Conscience: But they might take that money away and then you can't buy that
money for concert tickets. And you NEED concert tickets!
Responsible Conscience: You don?t NEED concert tickets you NEED books.
Laura (thinking): Well, I should just call Customer Service to be sure I guess.
Laura (out loud): Hi, I received an email about a refund and I have some questions.
First of all what exactly is it?(pause) Where did it come from? (pause) What am I supposed
to do with it? (Pause) Oh...after my financial aid goes through and my loans are applied
this is what I get? wow! Do I have to pay it back? (pause) I don?t, unless there are
new charges applied to my account or it was part of a loan? Okay thank you! You have a
great day too!
Irresponsible Conscience: That was stupid.
Responsible Conscience: No it wasn't.
Laura remembers the Customer Service?s last words on the phone call: "Feel free to call
us if you have any more questions?"
Laura (thinking): Okay, here we go student checklist.
Responsible Conscience: It's important to get what you need first.
Laura (out loud to conscience voice): Yeah I know. I got it.
Laura (thinking): Okay let's see, I'll make a list of my needs: Books, supplies, I guess
I should put some aside for the unexpected...Aw man....if I add up the money from my lifeguarding
job this summer it looks like.... I can't get the front row concert tickets.
BUT I can get middle section!!
Friend (out loud): Hey what?s up.
Laura (out loud): Nothing... what about you?
Friend (out loud): I just got this really weird email from the University....I think
it's a scam..they said I got a refund. I think I'm just going to ignore it.
Laura (out loud): Well. You shouldn't do that... I'll help you out. I just talked to customer
service, they?re awesome. Okay open your email. Here's what you gotta do..
Summary of major points in the video:
If you receive a student refund, it's important that you follow up with it. Make sure to check
your account immediately to assure that all the charges you expect to pay are there. This
can be confusing, so we have developed this student account check list to assist you in
reviewing your account.
It is also important to continue to review your student account throughout the semester
in case there are new charges due to an overlooked fee being charged later, a change in courses
or an adjustment in your financial aid. An overdue balance could cause a financial hold
to be placed on your account during registration periods preventing you from getting into the
classes you need for graduation!
In addition, make sure that you find a method that works for you to budget your money throughout
the semester. You can use software on your computer or applications on your smart phone.
Moving all of your refund into a savings account or paying for big-ticket needs like your rent
up front for the entire semester could also save you a lot of heartache later. Find what
works best for you, and if you need ideas to help you stick to your budget, please feel
